FIREBALL by Nazarea Andrews

A Standalone Contemporary Romance

(River Street Bar series, #1)

Coming March 8

Blurb:

He’s infuriating…
Dempsey Jones has been a nuisance my entire life, the straight-laced Boy Scout grown up to be a firefighter, of all things. He was the one helping kittens out of trees and old ladies cross the road while I was lighting cherry bombs with my best friend in abandoned buildings, and now that we’re all grown up—even if my Dad doesn’t agree—he’s still just as annoying.
She’s impossible…
Taite Ridley has been a constant my whole life, the curly haired mischievous daughter of the police chief, charming and devious and alluring. She was wild in ways I never dared to be and too big for our little town. But she’s here, a small town cop, and I can’t avoid her, even if I wanted to.
And I don’t want to.
It’s like mixing fire and gasoline and when these two collide, someone is gonna get burned…

Excerpt:

I grew up in River City.
It’s a good place for a kid to grow up—small town enough that I could wander without causing much worry, as long as no one counted my father.
He counted himself, but I stopped a while ago.
But it’s small enough that there’s not enough crime that I couldn’t wander, and big enough that it didn’t bore even me to tears. It was this intoxicatingly perfect mix of small town and big city, where everyone knew everyone and we didn’t have to drive an hour to go to a mall or museum.
And I never wanted to leave it. River City was home. I wandered away for college, and promptly came back, and I loved it—it’s where every good memory I had was, a place I cared about with a ferocity that only a native could. It knew my secrets and my history and it kept both safe.
But right this second, as I stood on Mrs. Rudolph’s front yard in the sideways rain—she was perched on her covered porch with a cup of coffee clasped in her wrinkled hands—I was questioning literally every decision I’d ever made in my life.
“Ma’am, we checked your crawlspace last week.”
“That Harper checked it,” Mrs Rudolph says, dismissive as fuck and I hear a muffled snort behind me. My smile feels brittle as she smiles brightly at me. “But I know you’ll do a good job. You don’t mind, do you, Taite?”
And that’s why.
I love River City with all my heart, but I swear to god, becoming a cop in a city that watched me grow up was probably the worst idea I’d ever had.
And I’d had a long and illustrious career of bad ideas, as Daddy was very helpful to point out.
A choked noise came from behind me and I fixed my plastic smile a little bit wider before saying, “Gimme just one second, Mrs Rudolph, Officer Delgado and I need to talk.”
She nods agreeably and takes a sip of her damnable coffee and I turn to pin my partner with a glare.
Miguel doesn’t even have the good grace to try to hide his smile.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he says, smile wide and cheerful.
“It’s your turn to go crawling under houses.”
“How do you figure that?” he asks, attempting to school his expression.
“I went up the tree for the Foster girls’ kitten last week!”
“Didn’t Dempsey—”
I snarl and he very wisely shuts his mouth. His eyes are still a little too bright, though, and I kinda want to punch him. I do not stomp my foot. “You promised not to bring him up,” I snap.
“I know,” he gives me apologetic eyes. “I slipped, sorry.”
I glance back at the house, at Mrs Rudolph waiting anxiously.
“I have to go, don’t I?” I say, resigned.
Miguel nudges me with one shoulder. “If you don’t, we’ll be here next week. She’s not gonna believe any of us until you tell her there’s nothing down there.”
“But—”
This. This is the problem. I grew up here, the only daughter of the police chief, a fucking widower and somehow became the town mascot. Even when I want to be taken serious, it’s like all anyone sees is the knobby kneed, ratty haired fourteen year old running the streets with Miguel and getting into trouble.
I huff a curse and shrug out of my waterproofed jacket. The rain immediately starts biting into my uniform and I resign myself to spending the rest of my shift wet and muddy.
Maybe Miguel would let us swing by my apartment to change before we headed back to the station.
“I hate this,” I mutter and he nods.
But he doesn’t quite hide his grin as I drop to my knees and crawl under Mrs Rudolph’s damn house.
“I went to school for this. The fucking Academy. So I could crawl around in the mud looking for—fuck. Miguel, what the fuck am I even looking for?” I shout, my voice muffled.

“Kayla?”
Her eyes came up, a flash of recognition there. “Yes?”
“Are you going to sign the contract or do you have more questions?”
She picked up the pen sitting on top of the contracts that would bind the two of them together for the next six months. They would reevaluate the relationship at that point in time, but for the next six months, she was his. His bodyguard. His submissive.
Bought and properly paid for. He would take care of her and she would give him what he needed.
She signed with a flourish and sat back, a gleam of curiosity in her eyes.
He was curious, too, and there was zero reason to not satisfy their curiosity. Hard and soft limits had been gone over. They would find their communication style as they went along. But first she should understand that he was in control.
“Come sit on my lap.”
She didn’t hesitate. She stood and turned, shifting so she could maneuver her way onto his lap.
Her weight came down on him and he wrapped an arm around her waist. Damn but she made him feel big. He’d seen her take out a man twice her size, but sitting here in his lap she felt small and vulnerable, and fuck but that did it for him.
He slid a hand along her knee, letting himself indulge in the silky-smooth feel of her skin against his palm. “Did you do as I asked?”
He was well aware his voice had gone husky, deeper than normal.
“Yes, Joshua.” She squirmed the tiniest bit, as though trying to find a comfortable position. It might be difficult for her because she was sitting right on his cock, and it was harder and thicker than he could ever remember it being.
“How can I trust you?” This was all part of the game he loved. Here he could let go and play out the darker of his impulses—to control, to take, to possess.
See. Want. Have.
“You’ll have to check,” she replied. “Though shouldn’t we go inside?”
He reached out and picked up his cell with his free hand, pushing one number and connecting to the security room. He put them on speaker. She needed to understand what she was up against in order for the game to be fair. “Landon?”
“This is Burke,” the deep voice replied. “Shane’s on patrol. What can I do for you?”
“Burke, I would like to fuck my submissive on the third-floor balcony. Is anyone watching us? Can you see any cameras pointed our way?”
A low, masculine chuckle came across the line. “No, Mr. Hunt. And given the angle relative to the beach, you should enjoy your evening without worry. The only peepers I would worry about would be your next-door neighbor, and Jared is out for the night.”
“I wouldn’t care if he wasn’t. Keep up the good work.” He hung up and his hand tightened. “I would prefer when we’re playing that you don’t question me like that. I know where I want to fuck you. I know when I want to fuck you, and I’m in charge. If I want you in the middle of a crowded freeway, your only response is a yes or a no. Not to question me.”
She seemed to relax back against him, as though she was giving up the struggle and choosing to submit. “Yes, Joshua. Yes, I understand, and yes to the sex. Please.”
He liked the breathy please and loved how she squirmed. Still, he wasn’t absolutely sure she’d obeyed him, and he was a man who required proof. He slid his hand up her thigh. “Spread your legs for me.”
Her knees fell apart, and he could feel the heat from her core. He slipped a hand up until he made contact with her softest skin. No panties. Nothing but wet heat waiting for him, and it was obvious the play had cranked her up, too. His free hand eased one button on her shirt free, and then another and another until he could move in like a soldier conquering territory. No bra. Her breasts were like the rest of her. Soft and delicate. One nipple rolled against his palm, hardening then and there.
“I can see you’ve been an obedient sub,” he said, his mouth against her ear. “You need to stay that way or there will be punishment. I’m not a sadist, Kayla. I truly don’t get off on your pain, but I will give it to you if you need it. I am a disciplinarian. I gain satisfaction from your obedience. In exchange, I’ll show you how good it can be to obey me.”

EXCERPT: The Reulag Balhaire was not in the business of saving other ships. It was generally considered unwise to approach another ship unless one was prepared to have a hull shattered by cannon fire. But their curiosity was aroused. The burning ship was just a spot in the distance now, so they’d set course for the starboard side of the smaller ship, a gun pointed at the forecastle in the event there was trouble. Aulay watched the smaller ship slowly come into view, its outline muted against the darkening sky, the clouds weighing down on the masts. It wasn’t until they were almost on the ship that they could see it was listing. Iain the Red was studying it as they approached. “No’ a fly boat, no,” he said. “A bilander.” “A bilander!” Beaty blustered. “What nonsense!” Whether a fly boat or bilander, neither were particularly well suited for the open seas. “Is there a flag?” he asked. “No.” Iain the Red paused, then laughed. “Look at them now, trying to lower the sail.” He laughed again with great amusement. “They look like children romping around a bloody maypole! Look at them trying to untangle those shroud lines, aye? They’re twisted up every which way—oof, there went one, down on his arse!” The men gathered at the railing to watch, and laughed at the blundering of the crew on the other ship as they tried to free a sail from a broken mast with what looked like a lot of pushing and shoving. “Aye, give it over, Iain, let’s have a look,” one said, and they began to pass the spyglass around, all of them doubling over with mirth. The spyglass came back around to Iain, but when he held it up, he stopped laughing. “Diah, de an diabhal?” he exclaimed and lowered the instrument, turning a wide-eyed look to Aulay. “What, then?” Aulay asked, feeling a mild tick of alarm, imagining a gun pointed at them, or a pirate’s flag being raised. “A lady,” Iain said, as if he’d never seen one. A lady? It was not unheard of for one to be on the high seas; wives of captains sometimes sailed with them. If it were anyone else, a lady of importance, she’d not be sailing on a rickety boat like that. “In a proper gown and everything,” Iain said, his voice full of awe. Aulay didn’t know what a proper gown meant to Iain, so he motioned for the spyglass to have a look. He could scarcely make her out, but it was definitely a woman standing at the railing, holding a white flag that almost matched the color of the hair that whipped long and unbound about her face. There were a few men beside her, all of them clinging to the railing, all of them looking rather desperately in the direction of his ship. Aulay instructed Beaty to maneuver closer, and when there was nothing but a small bit of sea between the two ships, the men’s frantic attention to the sail on the other ship was forgotten in favor of lowering a jolly boat down the hull. There was more chaotic shoving among them until four men scrambled down a rope ladder into the boat and began to row with abandon toward the ReulagBalhaire. The woman remained behind on the ship’s deck with a few men, including one that was the size of a small mountain, towering a head above all the others. When the smaller boat reached them, one of the men grabbed on to the rope ladder to steady them, and one rose to standing, bracing his legs apart to keep his balance. “Madainnmhath,” he called up, and with an affected swirl of his hand, he bowed low. And very nearly tipped over the side when a swell caught him unawares. “Scots, then,” Beaty said. “That’s something, at least.” “We are in need of your help, kind sirs!” the man called up, having managed to right himself. “We’ve been set upon by pirates, aye?” He spoke with a strange cadence, as if he were a town crier delivering this news to a crowded venue. The men did not carry swords or guns that Aulay could see. It seemed all they could do to keep the jolly from tipping too far to one side. “That ship flew the colors of the king,” he called down. The spokesman looked startled. He squatted down to consult the other men in his small boat. A flurry of shaking heads and talking over one another ensued, until the man stood up again and said, “She flew no such flag when she fired, on me word, sir! She fired with no provocation from us!” He pressed his hand to his chest quite earnestly.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley

comes a new story in her Chaos series…

I'm back at the compound to spend some much needed time with my favorite MC boys and biker babes ~ the Chaos crew. It's been a while since visiting Ride, and I sorely missed these brothers of the cut and their sexy badass Alpha ways. Fascinated with these characters since reading Motorcycle Man, each steamy novel within this spin-off series was gritty, intense, and passion-filled. The story told in Rough Ride was no different. Once again Kristen Ashley fed my never-ending addiction for her romances with another emotional tale, this time featuring two minor characters we've met before and whose stories I've longed for ~ Snapper and Rosalie.

Rosalie "Rosie" Holloway had a complicated history with Chaos. Before putting herself on the line as their informant, providing information on (her now ex) Throttle's MC, Rosie first appeared in Own the Wind as Shy Cage's ex-girlfriend. Even though their time together was short, and Shy abruptly dumping Rosalie led to his beautiful life with Tabby, a part of me felt genuinely sorry for how she was left shattered. I never resented or faulted Rosie for being involved with Shy, as she was a victim of circumstances; I just wanted to know this woman's story and see her find happiness. My wishes for Rosie finally came true in this novella, as Everett “Snapper” Kavanagh proved to be worthy of her heart by the tenderly mending all of her wounds. The cherry on top ~ there was no friction between any of these characters due to their past connections, and I was relieved. For me, this story was about discovering the real Rosalie, experiencing her pain, the long road to healing, and seeing her relationship with Snapper blossom to true love. I relished every moment of their slow-burning, heartfelt journey.

A sweet and soft-spoken woman who had the unfortunate knack of hitching her wagon on the wrong star, Rosalie's story tugged at my heartstrings.  She was a lost soul ~ mourning the loss of her dad while searching for the 'forever love' her parents shared, led her to find only heartache and brutality. The abuse she endured, mentally and physically, gutted me. Her luck changed for the better when without choice she became a part of Chaos. That's one of the things I adore most about these bikers; how they all value the bonds of brotherhood by protecting and caring for their extended family. Tack and his crew embraced Rosalie, kept her safe within their arms, in the most touching way. But it was Snapper's fierce love, patience, and persistence that finally put an end to Rosie's rough ride.

Loving her from afar for so long, he gently made his way into her heart and life when finally getting the chance. And while earning her trust and affections, Snapper managed to become a perfect hero I truly adored.

I loved all things Snapper. He was an incredibly sexy biker badass ~ possessive, controlling and edgy ~ but in a remarkably calm and subdued way. The depths of his love and patience when dealing with Rosie, guarding her heart and giving her the time she needed, was moving. However, don't let his easy-going demeanor fool you. As mellow as his character was, in times of trouble, Snapper unleashed a fury like no other. Proving he would do anything and everything to protect Rosie and the club family.

A shorter, fast-paced read jam-packed with so much KA goodness, this novella delivered and satisfied my Chaos craving. Although considered a standalone, I do recommend reading all the books in this series, to appreciate Snapper and Rosalie's passionate romance and to understand their history. I was thrilled to see all of my favorites MC characters, as well as revisiting some old Rock Chick friends hanging out in Fortnums and Zip's Gun Emporium. And the epilogue...holy moly, was it EXPLOSIVE! Angst-filled and leaving me gripping my kindle with my head spinning, I was conjuring up all sorts of plot theories and scenarios. The stage is set here for future books, and I cannot wait until the next installment ~ Wild Like the Wind.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this publication

“We got it now. You’re good. Gonna take care of you.”
No they weren’t.
He wasn’t.
No one was going to take care of me.
But me.
Not anymore.
They were supposed to do that before.
And now I was on a cement floor, beat to hell.
But I was going to be.
Good that was.
Yes, I was going to be.
Finally.
And it was going to be me that made me that too.
I turned my face into Snap’s cut as an indication he shouldn’t stroke my hair anymore, as a way to tell him to get the heck away from me, to leave me to the ambulance, to leave me alone, to get out of my hair, out of there, out of my life.
But the fabric snagged my swollen nose and a whimper slid from me.
“Baby,” he whispered, feeling close, seemingly all around me, “just hang tight. Don’t move. Help will be here soon.”
Help would be there soon.
I’d be in an ambulance.
Then I’d be in a hospital.
While there, I’d talk to the police.
Eventually, I’d go home and live in fear of what my boyfriend’s motorcycle club would do to me after I pressed charges against them for beating the crap out of me.
What could be worse than this?
I didn’t know. Trailer

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
